In today’s fast-changing landscape, leadership is undergoing a profound transformation. The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries and how leaders operate, while also pushing us toward a more human-centered approach. As disruptive technologies like AI become more integrated, we find that successful leadership increasingly hinges on empathy, flexibility, and understanding—especially in a workforce that includes digital natives. The post-pandemic world has only heightened the demand for compassionate, agile leadership.
I’ve long embraced transformational and positive leadership, with a focus on people and adaptability. The challenge now is to balance these human-centric principles with the incredible capabilities AI offers. The question isn't whether AI can coexist with human leadership, but how it can enhance it.
Leadership Evolution: Embracing Transformation and Adaptability
Throughout my career, I’ve gravitated toward leadership styles that emphasize human connection—transformational, human-centered, and situational approaches. From the start, I believed in leading with empathy and inspiration, prioritizing growth and innovation within my teams. My leadership journey took a pivotal turn when I stepped into a leadership role at a leading creative institution.
In my first meeting as Director of Continuing Education, I entered in formal business attire, while the Marketing Director walked in wearing a Star Wars shirt. This wasn’t a clash of leadership styles but an important moment of self-reflection. I realized that to lead in this creative environment, I needed to reconnect with my own artistic side—something I had set aside in my professional life. I’ve always been passionate about music and play the guitar, so this experience made me think of Johari's Window, reminding me that there are aspects of ourselves that we don’t fully see until we’re in a new context. That meeting didn’t just reshape how I approached the team—it helped me realign with my creative roots, allowing me to bring more of myself to the leadership table.
I began to adapt my approach to fit the environment. This wasn’t about compromising values—those are non-negotiable—but about embracing flexibility. When working with highly creative individuals, I learned that a rigid approach can stifle innovation. By shifting toward a more open, transformational style, I unlocked the team’s potential and fostered an environment of collaboration and growth.
Angela’s book Multipliers perfectly illustrates this dynamic. She shares a story about a female leader in the construction industry whose collaborative style was met with resistance in a traditionally top-down sector. This example shows the importance of recognizing the environment and leading in a way that unlocks the potential of those around you. Similarly, Jack Welch, one of the most celebrated CEOs of the 20th century, said in an interview, “What works for me may not work for you.” Welch’s point was clear: while our leadership frameworks can guide us, adaptability to the environment is critical.

Leadership in a Changing World: From Pandemic to AI
The global pandemic accelerated the shift toward human-centered leadership. As leaders, we were forced to confront unprecedented challenges that required us to show deeper empathy and flexibility. We were not just managing teams but helping people through one of the most difficult times in modern history. Remote work became the norm, mental health took center stage, and leaders needed to adjust to these changing dynamics.
As we faced these challenges, another paradox emerged: while AI and other disruptive technologies were gaining traction, leadership was becoming more focused on the human element. AI has been instrumental in giving leaders the tools to better understand their teams, from real-time feedback to predictive insights, allowing for more informed, empathetic decision-making.
How AI Enhances Human-Centered Leadership
AI and human-centered leadership are not in conflict; they complement each other. Here’s how AI can actually elevate leadership by providing insights that empower more thoughtful, empathetic approaches:
Informed Empathy: AI tools can provide real-time data on team dynamics, employee sentiment, and performance trends. This helps leaders understand the needs and challenges of their teams more deeply, allowing for better support and personalized engagement.
Better Decision Making: With AI’s ability to analyze vast amounts of data, leaders can make faster, more accurate decisions. This doesn’t replace human intuition but enhances it, freeing up leaders to focus on more strategic and relational aspects of their role.
Agility and Adaptation: AI-driven insights allow leaders to stay agile, making quick adjustments based on emerging trends or potential challenges. Leaders can respond faster to changing environments and focus on building a resilient and adaptive team culture.
Fostering Continuous Learning: AI offers opportunities for continuous development, helping leaders and teams stay ahead of the curve. By fostering a culture of ongoing learning, leaders can ensure their teams remain adaptable and innovative.
The Future of Leadership: AI and Empathy Working Together
Looking forward, the leaders who will thrive in this AI-driven world are those who can blend the best of technology with the human touch. The pandemic reminded us that leadership requires empathy and connection. AI, far from diminishing these traits, gives us the tools to amplify them. With AI handling data analysis and automating routine tasks, leaders are free to invest more time in fostering relationships, supporting team development, and driving strategic growth.
As AI continues to evolve, leadership will not lose its human-centered focus. Instead, it will become more aligned with the needs of today’s workforce. The leaders of the future will not only be technologically adept but will lead with empathy, flexibility, and a clear vision that integrates both human and machine capabilities.
Conclusion: Leading in the AI Era
AI is not a substitute for human leadership—it is a tool that enhances it. The most successful leaders of tomorrow will be those who can combine the insights and efficiency of AI with empathy, adaptability, and human connection. As we continue to navigate an ever-changing world, AI can serve as an enabler, freeing leaders to focus on the qualities that truly make a difference.
